Bonifacio, Corsica

Bonifacio, Corsica, on the south-western tip of the island. A place I visited in 1996 while on hiatus from a family vacation in Calvi. This town really captured my imagination, for obvious reasons. It was stunning in its stark rocky beauty. I was on a budget and lived largely on ham and cheese crepes that I ate overlooking a view similar to this.

It was a great experience to travel on my own for a few days, try to resucitate my rusty French and explore the world solo, for the first time in many years. Something about the independent spirit of Corsica and the Corsican people stood out for me, both in terms of the rugged environment in which they lived and the rugged political will they exhibited regarding their struggle for independence from France.
One night, I was able to go to a free concert in a park in which "I Chjami Aghjalesi" performed (amazing polyphonic music - see http://chjamiaghjalesi.free.fr/) - their music and the reaction from their audience said it all.
